Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me, or will they? Words are technically very simple items in our very hectic world. In English they are just various arrangements of 26 letters, and us as humans have just placed a meaning behind each pattern that was strung together. Despite this simplicity, three men, enthralled by metaphors would argue that names and any words can have quite a bit of power. TED talk speaker, James Geary, and authors Michael Erard, and Dhruv Khullar have each taken time to investigate and report on the impact that words, and most importantly metaphors have on this world, and on people. If someone was asked to name the similarities between letters and metal, they would most likely be dumbfounded and lost for any explanation. They would most likely glaze over the important detail, that they both can yield very dangerous weapons. The only key difference between the two is that a knife can hurt the body, while a metaphor can impact the mind. Metaphors are a form of comparison between two items, however they can do a lot more than your average Venn diagram. They provide vivid imagery and can alter the outlook a human has on anything. The brain is one of the most important parts of a human’s body, and metaphors target a person’s mind. Metaphors alter the mindset and outlook we have on life in positive and negative ways. The symbolism used in metaphors shapes the perception any human has on the world around them.

Interesting re-interpretation of the quote changing words, to names, addition to hooking with a question. As I read through this, I really enjoy your eloquent breakdown of the situation or rough thesis you’re providing. A person reading this would truly see the potential intellectual argument or writing yet to come. Also, I do like the metaphors that you do include in your introduction paragraph are metaphors that the common individual might have heard of, so that when they’re reading this there is some relevancy. Only criticism I could have, is maybe imbed a quote to pull in some credibility. Your vocabulary and your breakdown of everything is really good, I just want other readers early on to see your credibility right off the bat.

    1. Based on what I’m reading, you’re putting emphasis of how metaphors impact an individual on a mental and if it was possible, physical level. Essentially, what power does a metaphor have?

    2. From what I’m understanding, your topics are revolving around the powers of the metaphor, and the foundation of the english language.

    3. You’re covering the strength of metaphors used in any scenario.

    4. This argument matters due to the simple fact that, metaphors are an everyday tool and language used by the mundane and superior. It is crucial that we realize the effects of the metaphor and the form(s) of impacts it might have on the individual.

    5. Metaphors impact a person on a mental level.

    6. Try to address your prompt a little bit more it does take a minute to soak in what you’re getting at, other than that you do address it pretty well.
